From the perspective of the time (and of so many romanticized western stories) 31-year-old Tom Pollock must have seemed a desirable, exciting mate for the 16-year-old daughter of Reverend Chivington. Supposedly they met because Pollock had the only buggy in early Denver and Sarah was one of the “young ladies who cajoled a ride” from him. Tom and Sarah were married four months after they met.14

Thomas Pollock (1829-1877) was “a very stirring pioneer” in both gold rush Denver and gold rush Silverton. Tom “might have joined that select and legendary few who seem to have blazed all the trails, dug all the gold, punched all the cattle, tamed all the towns, and fought all the Indians all by themselves.” A.
